ARTIST: Brenda Samuels
MEDIUM: Oil painting on wood
ABOUT THE ARTWORK:
The work, ‘Sanitised’ references the pandemic. Shelves in the supermarket emptied rapidly and an item that was once used mostly in medical practices quickly became a household item. Suddenly the product became increasingly ubiquitous. I painted the hand sanitiser in a finely crafted box to demonstrate its newfound desirability.
Sydney-based artist, Brenda Samuels creates still-life paintings depicting objects emblematic of consumerist culture. Recent impasto renderings of items such as anti-aging moisturizer bottles and takeaway coffee cups, invites reflection on such things as the seduction of packaging, our quest for youthfulness and the geopolitics of food production.
