About the Artwork

I paint the flower as metaphor, exploring themes of love, lust and longing. Working in thin layers of oil paint built up through scumbling and glazing, I construct the surface to suggest the subtle play of light on and through petals and leaves. This magnolia grandiflora flower takes its title from the Sharon Olds poem Telling my Mother.
